![]() The whole notion that any emperor- and they all knew more about the dark and ugly side of the Roman Republic than most of us ever will- would actually have longed for the return of the Republic, was pretty preposterous when Robert Graves and "I, Claudius" put the thought into Claudius' mouth, in his completely fictional speech to his son Britannicus. I'm just so sure something like that could really have happened. More troublesome, for those who'd like to see their history Roman but not romanticized, was the scene in "Gladiator" in which Aurelius encouraged his son to accept the fictional Maximus as co-heir, because "Maximus will restore the Republic!" Yeah, riiiiiight. We can be pretty sure Aurelius wasn't murdered by his infamous son Commodus, for instance. Well, that movie got a few of the bare facts right, but only a few. If you saw "Gladiator," you probably already think you know a thing or two about Marcus Aurelius. Now, let's proceed, full speed ahead, with my personal favorite silver of Pius' adopted successor, the somewhat famous Marcus Aurelius.
